No fewer than 10 persons have been killed while several houses set ablaze in a communal clash between residents of Isu in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State and their neighbours from Utuma in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The investigation revealed that the clash started on Wednesday between the two neighbouring communities over the discovery of limestone deposit in Isu by an indigenous company, Ibeto.
A source said that the Ibeto Group, an indigenous firm interested in the development of limestone had begun the construction of a road in the area to mine Limestone.
A community leader, one Nicholas Igwe Kalu who spoke to our correspondent said that since the discovery of the limestone, the people of Utuma had become hostile to the people of Isu, which of course led to clash on Wednesday.
He said that no fewer than 10 persons had been killed in the clash and that the people of Isu had sent a save our soul, SOS, to the Abia State Government to urgently rescue them from being wiped out by Utuma people.
However, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Anthony Ogbizi who confirmed the crisis denied the report that 10 people were killed in the clash.
He said that huts were burnt by the warring factions but that nobody was killed in the fracas.
