A Man ‘Ekanem Edet’ Commits Suicide at Mbiabong Itam in Itu LGA of Akwa Ibom State Due to Economic Hardship
One Mr. Ekanem Edet has hanged himself at Mbiabong Itam in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, blaming his action on the current economic hardship.
The 50-year-old man left a suicide note for his wife and two children and hanged himself before they could arrive.
Edet sold cigarette, local gin, popularly known as Ogogoro to feed the family and pay his children tuition fees but the business crumbled due to the current economic situation in the country.
According to one of Edet’s friends, who identified himself as Simeon, the deceased had been complaining recently about his inability to feed his family and pay the children school fees.
He said, “Edet’s customers have drastically reduced. People no longer drink Ogogoro and it affected Edet. But it’s unfortunate that he could kill himself. He should have endured.”
Edet who was the former Secretary of the Mbiabong Village Council put in the suicide note that he could no longer endure the hardship, asking his children and wife to forgive him for taking his own life.
When the wife and children arrived home on the fateful day, it was a gory sight as they ran helter-skelter shouting for help.
Members and elders of the community later came and performed traditional rites before the dangling dead could be removed from the hook.
Edet had since been buried. Meanwhile, the family had refused to report the crime to the police for investigation.
