A Peep Into Atiku’s Bags For Dollars

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the noise behind the checking of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar by the immigration officer at the airport.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been in the news in the last three days.

He raised the alarm because the Nigeria Immigration Officer had stopped and searched him at the Airport. Atiku who had just returned from Dubai in his private jet was not happy that the immigration officer had to do the normal routine check on him.

A video also went viral during the week about the ace actor Kunle Afolayan who was raging at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport because he was stopped from entering the departure lounge.

The actor lambasted the government, the airport management to send a wrong signal to the world about the lapses in Nigeria airports.

Indeed, the country’s airports have been battling with so many problems, ranging from obsolete infrastructure and poor management over the years, the two events in the news in the last three days look more of politics than business.

Perhaps Atiku ought to have been accorded his due respect as a former vice president, this should not stop the immigration from doing the right thing by ensuring that every person is checked while coming in or going out of the airports.

And it is not abnormal that the present status of Atiku as the main political opponent of President Muhammadu Buhari has made him more susceptible and suspicious to security issues.

For the fact that Atiku held a meeting with some of his supporters and PDP chieftains in Dubai has raised a level of nosiness in the All Progressives Congress-led government to want to know a bit of plan of the main opposition party, PDP.

The PDP presidential primary was a rain of dollars where the highest bidder won. Atiku is a businessman and if one could judge him by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s book, “My Watch”, Atiku has always believed he can use the money to get whatever he wants.

Perhaps, the immigration officers were asked to search Atiku’s jet for dollars and his pocket for other foreign currencies ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

The 2019 election, expectedly is going to be a game of dollars between the major political parties and one of the ways to deflate Atiku is to ensure that he is not allowed to bring in foreign currencies. But if one may ask, where did the PDP presidential aspirants get the dollars they distributed during the primary?

It shows that thousands of these political elites are stashing dollars by the day as they prepare for the 2019 general election. Of course, Buhari will have an idea of this because he also rode on dollars to win both his primary in 2014 against Atiku and Kwankwaso.

Buhari, despite his pretence, knows that electorate were monetarily induced by the APC to win against the dollars spinner former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Jonathan rubbished US dollars in 2015 to cripple Nigeria’s economy and consequently dumped it in recess. Things have not changed since then, except that the politicians now display dollars with some sense of decorum.
