Africa To Be Given Nine or Ten World Cup Slots – Infantino
The president of the world governing body for football, Gianni Infantino has stated that he is ready to fulfill his promise by increasing the slots of African countries at the FIFA World Cup to nine or ten.
Addressing a press conference on this development, Infantino said, “We want everyone to have the right to dream and how better to do that is taking part in a major event such as a World Cup.”
Recall that this was part of Infantino’s manifesto before his election as FIFA president last year and he said that such a possibility would only come to fruition if the format of the world cup is expanded from 32 teams which it has held since France 1998 to 48 teams.
The dream came to pass as the FIFA Council approved the expansion and it comes into effect from the 2026 tournament.
This will mean that all continents will have a greater number of teams to compete and at the same time make it possible for some countries who would never have had the hope of being at a world cup partake in the showpiece.
