ANALYSIS: APC And Sudden Silence In Pacesetter State

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the governorship election in Oyo State, the APC, PDP chance and the revolt of the electorate.

The residents of Oyo State are speaking loud against an emperor who has been ruling them for about eight years now. Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has enjoyed what no governor has ever tasted in Ibadan.

Oyo has never voted a governor for the second term but Ajimobi broke the jinx but squandered the opportunity, thus spoiling the show for his party candidate, Adebayo Adelabu in the Saturday election.

There is sudden silence in the camp of APC as the results trickling in are not favourable to the party.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Seyi Makinde is taking the lead, a sign that the Oyo may yet set another pace in the centre of the old wild and wide West by rejecting the Adebayo, the scion of one of the grandfathers of politics in Ibadan, Adegoke Adelabu, the peculiar Mess. (Penkelemesi).

Ordinarily, Adalabu would have won the gubernatorial poll in Oyo based on his popularity, personal acceptance and the family he had come from but he finds himself in a party whose incumbent governor has become so irritating to the Oyos.

Unarguably, Ajimobi spoiled the show for Adelabu, having lost his own senatorial seat early, two Saturdays ago. Ajimobi was barred from APC campaign by the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who had since noticed that the governor is a “bad market” in Oyo politics at present.

Yes, there were coalition and alliances before Saturday, the friendship between the former Governor, Alao Akala and the APC had only yielded some fruits in Ogbomosho. The voters in Ibarapa, Oke Ogun and the Ibadans want Makinde instead of Adelabu.

They do not hate Adelabu but the APC whose incumbent governor, Ajimobi has failed woefully in his second term in Oyo State. He makes himself the emperor and says it to whosoever that cares that he is the “constituted Authority”.

He wields his swords at will, cutting his critics and bulldozing their structures, including that of a popular, physically challenged musician, Yinka Ayefele.

Ajimobi fell the Ayefele’s Radio house. Though he rebuilt it, after the noise was much, the electorate had already made up their minds to kick against anything that has to do with the governor, including his party, APC.

What happens in Oyo determines most times the mindset of the Yoruba nation. That is why Tinubu is keen on winning the state for the APC but not until the final results are announced, the godfather of Lagos politics is still confident.

He said in Lagos on Saturday that the story of APC is “O ja sope”, that is worthy of praising God. Of course, APC may win Kwara. Lagos is a done deal, Jide Sanwo-Olu will emerge the new Lagos Governor, the results are too obvious and it is a landslide.

But in Oyo State, PDP is speaking loud.
