APC And Tasks Before Oshiomole
Nigeria News takes a look at the tasks before the new National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole eventually emerged unopposed as the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress at the party’s national convention held in Abuja on Saturday.
He took over from Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. The convention also elected 18 other national officials to paddle the canoe of the APC for the next four years, according to the constitution.
Oyegun refused to seek re-election after his plan to perpetrate himself in office for another one year failed.
The outgone national executive officials of the party led by Oyegun actually proposed an extended tenure, which the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu faulted as undemocratic.
The National Working Committee had earlier agreed with the tenure extension, which President Muhammadu Buhari endorsed. But some of the party leaders disagreed with the stance and advised Buhari to kick against such undemocratic move.
Buhari later condemned the tenure extension as he described it as illegal. However, on Saturday, the convention brought in new national officials who are expected among other things to quickly mend the cracks in the party.
Judging by the convention, which took place despite the heavy downpour, it is like the APC has refused to really resolve issues with the splinter, called the new Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP or any other aggrieved group.
It is hard to believe that APC would be holding its national congress and Senate President Bukola Saraki, the group’s highest ranking political office holder and Nigeria’s number three would be in Russia with a college of PDP lawmakers on the invitation of the Russia Parliament.
Saraki also used the occasion to address the Nigeria senior football national team, Super Eagles towards beating Iceland on Friday. Saraki was very busy outside the country as his party, APC was preparing for a national congress. The dark clouds are certainly gathering on APC and the signs are not good.
Reconciliation must be the first assignment of the new APC leadership. They can’t go into the critical issues with this fractious house if they want to avoid spanking at the coming poll. While we pray that may God direct the party well, President Muhammadu Buhari must as a matter of urgency sit with the aggrieved to broker peace before the 2019 election.
The president had earlier said that he would not want to have a meeting with the nPDP, he will have to drop this idea and embrace those who are ready for dialogue.
Of course, Oshiomole’s ovation is loud now, he must learn from his predecessor, Oyegun who decided to run his own race without seeking advice from the core party members.
Oshiomole is an orator, now he will need to listen more than talk. Having governed a state for eight years, there is high hope that he will enjoy the cooperation of many state governors.
But what is germane now is how to use his skills to bring all aggrieved members together if the party must succeed in 2019 election.
