APC Leadership And The Battle of Personal Supremacy
ElevateNews takes a look at the leadership of APC and how the members are using the party for personal agenda.
The rancour between the Governor of Edo State and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress is not about implementing the agenda of the party but the personal interest of the individuals involved.
If it is about the party, by now, the rift would have been settled, according to the laid down rules of the APC.
I am not sure there is a one-party rule that is being broken now.
Just as it happened in Lagos when some interest group demanded the head of the former Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for allegedly failing or refusing to implement the APC agenda.
Whether it is APC agenda or not, some members of the party kicked against the Ambode’s Visionscape idea of waste management because it did not favour them.
Ambode’s predecessor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola had introduced the Public-Private Participation method to manage waste disposal in the State.
This method was primarily put in place to empower grassroots politicians in the State.
The politicians owned some of the trucks using for waste disposal and made their money through this. There was no uproar whatsoever, even though it was not a standing rule in the APC constitution that members of the party would participate in the PPP scheme.
However, a new idea by Ambode caused hiccups and eventually ended its second term ambition. In fact, Oshiomhole was one of the personalities used to push Ambode out through a kangaroo governorship primaries in Lagos.
We knew how the rift between Oshiomhole and Godwin Obaseki began and observed that the governor might suffer the same fate like Ambode.
But Obaseki himself saw the cards the APC played against Ambode just because the former Lagos Governor was loyal to the State instead of his godfather.
Obaseki must have learnt from this as he is not ready to bite the dust. He bought the loyalty of the State House of Assembly and took the control of the legislature to save himself from impeachment.
He worked to depopulate the fans of his predecessor by bringing into his fold the former National Chairman of the party, Chief Odigie-Oyegun.
Oyegun had been governor and a national chairman, just like Oshiomhole.
He is the best adviser for Obaseki for now, having used the same tactics to impose the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello in the name of implementing the party’s agenda.
This singular action actually led to Oyegun’s ouster as he failed to secure the second term in office. He fell out with the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who had preferred one Abiodun Faleke to Bello.
In the real sense, none of these political animals is actually enshrining the party regulation but their personal interests.
What they call party agenda is their personal agenda to test their popularity and supremacy
Some governors want Oshiomhole out of office by all means. They strategise, using the rancour between him and Obaseki to question his neutrality as a party leader in Edo politics.
Some governors are also loyal to Oshiomhole, mostly those he helped to get their first term ticket.
These ones want to settle the rift between Oshiomhole and Obaseki but it was gathered that Obaseki had been working against the arrangement.
He is so confident to win the APC primaries and eventually emerge the governor for the second time.
