APC’s New Bride, Senator Akpabio
Nigeria News takes a look at the plan by the APC to make Senator Godswill Akpabio the Senate President.
One good thing about Senator Godswill Akpabio is about how he has comported himself with a high level of decorum despite the absurdity at the Senate.
The Minority leader has refused to pick enemies from the ruling All Progressives Congress. As a minority leader, he is expected to lead the opposition against the passage of some bills sponsored by the Federal Government.
Akpabio’s position and presence at the Senate hardly go against the ruling APC despite being a key member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Many had argued that the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State had been silent because he had cases with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
This may not be far from the truth but Akpabio’s romance with the APC as at today may have erased whatever case he may be having with the EFCC.
He was with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo last week and on Sunday, Akpabio was with President Muhammadu Buhari in London. The closed-door meetings were not for public consumption anyway, it was obvious that a new Senate president might be born in a few weeks.
As the plan to remove the defected President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki by the APC senators gather momentum, the party leadership is strategizing on who will replace Saraki.
To remove Saraki, the APC must have the necessary number of lawmakers to vote him out. Though at present, the APC is having the largest number at the Senate, the party is seeking the support of Akpabio to increase the number and eventually throw out Saraki without committing any illegality.
Akpabio, according to findings, may defect to APC with 12 other PDP senators to remove Saraki. But he will not be doing this without any promise of a juicy position, perhaps the Senate president or deputy senate president by the APC.
He was with the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at Bourdillon, Ikoyi before jetting out to London. This is one of the steps he has to take to seal the deal before officially defecting on Wednesday.
By doing this, Akpabio would have covered some of the inside stories of his past as governor of Akwa Ibom story.
His defection will also depict the immorality of the ruling APC, who paints itself as holy but ready to mingle with the corrupt member of the PDP for the political score.
Recalled that EFCC traced a whopping amount of money to Akpabio and charged him for money laundering. This will be swept under carpet as soon as he complies to dance with the APC.
Unarguably, Akpabio is strong in Akwa Ibom State. His popularity gave over one million votes to the former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 to favourably compete with over 1.9 million votes recorded by President Muhammadu Buhari in Kano.
Becoming a senate president will make him do more work for Buhari in Akwa Ibom and other south-south states in 2019. This is a political game the APC will not joke with, which of course may start on Wednesday.
