President Muhammadu Buhari has said that any herdsman carrying arms should be arrested and prosecuted.
He said this during his visit to Jalingo, Taraba capital, adding that a peaceful herdsman does not need to carry a gun around.
He attributed the various clashes in some of the states to lack of love and unity among the various residents, calling on traditional rulers in Taraba to preach the message of peace to their people.
Buhari stated that he had to visit Taraba, following the killings in Mambila Plateau, which of course could have been abated if the people really loved themselves.
The president is due in Benue, Nasarawa and Rivers State.
Buhari said, “Please charge any herdsman that carries AK47 to court.”
However, the traditional rulers will have to do a lot of jobs even more than the government because they are the custodian of peaceful culture, Buhari said.
He stated, “Myself and the Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku are here temporarily. But you the traditional rulers will reign on your forefathers’ stools as long as you live. That makes it so important for you to create peace in your communities.”
Governor Ishaku commended the president for the visit as he promised to ensure peaceful co-existence of all ethnic groups and businesses in the state.
