As Ruling And Opposition Partisans Agreed On Self Interest
ElevateNews takes a look at the clear drama of party disloyalty in Bayelsa governorship election.
It may sound unbelievable but it is true that the chieftains of the All Progressives Congress visited former President Goodluck Jonathan at his Otuoke residence, Bayelsa to rejoice with him last Sunday night.
This is because the PDP leader and former president engineered the victory of the APC governorship candidate, David Lyon against his own PDP candidate, Douye Diri last Saturday.
To appreciate the president’s gesture, a powerful delegation was sent by the APC national executive to Jonathan on a thank you visit. Hmmmm, that is Nigeria’s politics. It is based purely on self-interest and not on party philosophy or agenda.
The deployment of soldiers in Bayelsa was an idea by Jonathan and President Muhammadu Buhari to prevent the State’s ruling PDP from rigging the election.
It was also a strategy deployed by the duo to intimidate PDP members from coming out to vote. Jonathan was so good at this. As a President, he arbitrarily used the State security apparatus to win elections in some States. Ekiti was one of the States where Ayo Fayose defeated Kayode Fayemi in 2014.
Again, the method worked perfectly on Saturday and ended with a celebration at the sitting room of the former President Jonathan.
Of course, PDP has condemned the election in Bayelsa but it is yet to take a decision on Jonathan for his anti-party activities. Will Jonathan be suspended by PDP for defecting to APC at home but covering his head with umbrella outside Otuoke?
I am not sure. This is not new. Former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel did same while still serving as the chairman, campaign organisation of the PDP presidential candidate, former vice president Atiku Abubakar.
Daniel preferred to pitch his tent with Dapo Abiodun of APC instead of a PDP governorship candidate.
Of course, the PDP grandfather, former President Olusegun Obasanjo did not only deny the party at home, he publicly tore his membership card and endorsed Bubari, the APC candidate.
There is nothing like party loyalty. This crop of politicians work for personal interest and it shows in the renewed friendship between the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose and the incumbent, Kayode Fayemi. The latter was at the former’s son wedding ceremony last Saturday while the two political parties were slugging it out in Kogi and Bayelsa States.
From available facts, it is not in doubt that APC won the Bayelsa guber poll on a clean slate. But the twist in the victory is the fact that former President Goodluck Jonathan worked against his party, the PDP, just to prove his superiority above Governor Seriake Dickson.
Jonathan wanted Timi Alaibe but Dickson preferred a man he can boss around, in order to keep his influence in the State intact.
Not minding the fact that PDP gave him the opportunity to rule Bayelsa State and Nigeria, Jonathan was more concerned about taking his pound of flesh.
He did to Dickson what one of his predecessors in Aso Rock, former President Olusegun Obasanjo did to him in 2015.
