Unknown gunmen stormed Omoku, in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State early Monday, killing about 14 persons who were returning from church.
The residents had trooped to church to usher in New Year and were coming back when the gunmen shot repeatedly at them.
It was gathered that about 27 persons were seriously injured while there were conflicting reports about the number of death.
Some eyewitnesses said that 16 people were killed but the Rivers State Police Command debunked the conflicting figures, adding that the actual number of casualties would be released to the media as soon as it is able to get it.
Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, told our correspondent that those injured had been taken to hospitals for treatment while the dead bodies had been taken to the morgue.
Omoni stated that the police were working round the clock to apprehend the killers.
“The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the operation and other tactical heads have been mobilised there to restore peace.
“The Commissioner of Police (Ahmed Zaki) has launched a manhunt for the bandits to ensure they are arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
