Battle Line Between Oshiomhole And His Governors
Nigeria News takes a look at the rancour between the National Chairman of the APC and some of the state governors.
The animosity between some of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and the party National Chairman, Adams Oshimhole is becoming stronger every day.
These governors want Oshimhole out of the seat at all cost and this is because the National Working Committee of the party being led by Oshiomhole has stopped them from having their ways.
The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and of course Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode are among the governors that do not love the leadership style of Oshiomhole.
The story began from Lagos when the NWC upheld the results of the governorship primaries that produced Mr Jide Sanwo-Olu. The state governor, Ambode had reacted angrily, condemning the polls that produced Sanwo-Olu.
Though Ambode had since congratulated the winner, it is obvious that the governor has a score to settle with Oshiomhole who refused the rescheduling of the primaries even when the NWC monitoring team had discredited the exercise.
The team had organized a news conference that there was no primary in Lagos and that Sanwo-Olu never won an election. While the team was busy in Lagos, Oshiomhole was with President Muhammadu Buhari where he upheld the results as announced by the Lagos APC Chairman, Mr Tunde Balogun.
In Ogun State, Governor Ibikunle Amosun who had earlier agreed to a direct primary disappeared from the scene when he noticed that his anointed candidate, Adekunle Akinlade might not win.
The governor’s faction organized a parallel primary, using delegate option where Akinlade emerged as the candidate while another faction of APC organized a direct primary, supervised by the party NWC team, where an oil magnate, Mr Dapo Abiodun was elected.
Expectedly, Oshiomhole upheld the election of Abiodun as the Ogun State governorship candidate with his name already sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Since the announcement of Abiodun, Governor Amosun had visited President Muhammadu Buhari severally, perhaps to change the status quo but had always met the brick wall. The president has refused to change the decision of the NWC while Amosun had also vowed not to recognize Abiodun.
Amosun alleged that there was no primary in Ogun, adding that Oshiomhole, the former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba and his counterpart for Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu conspired to write results that announced Abiodun as the state APC gubernatorial candidate.
Tinubu and Osoba have kept mute despite the allegation. In Ondo, the APC NWC had submitted the name of Senator Ajayi Boroface to INEC as the senatorial candidate for Ondo North, having won in the primary.
The Ondo State Governor, Akeredolu described the primary as a charade, saying that the state APC never agreed to use direct primary to elect its candidates for the 2019 general election.
But to Oshiomhole, the direct primary was supervised by the NWC team and that Boroface was elected. The aggrieved governors, though are angry with their party, APC and the National Chairman, Oshiomhole, they all promise to campaign for Buhari in 2019 presidential election.
