Big Tasks Before Sanwo-Olu

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the tasks before Lagos State Governor-Elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Lagosians are eagerly waiting to see wonders that the state governor-elect Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu will perform as soon as he is sworn-in on May 29.

His spokesman, Gboyega Akosile said in a statement that Sanwo-Olu is always in contact with the incumbent, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on how to inaugurate a strong transition committee, calling on Lagos residents to disregard the rumour of a frosty relationship between the two.

Lagos is movingat the slowest pace at present. The present administration embarked on some bigprojects, which can only be completed by the coming administration.

The road andbridge project in Agege, the Oshodi modern transport exchange, the LagosAirport Road, the Blue Rail Line, the Bariga-Ilaje Jetty are among the projectsthat Sanwo-Olu must quickly complete to worm himself into the hearts ofLagosians.

Transporters and commuters feel pains on Lagos roads nowadays. The potholes have become gully on many of the roads. Daily, there is heavy vehicular traffic on the roads caused by the damaged portion.

The State Public Works Corporation that usually fixes bad road has suddenly stopped performing this role. The rainy season is fast approaching, some of the small potholes will soon become a big gully.

Since Ambode lost his bid for the second term, the Visionscape Company that is responsible for the management of waste has been silent while the PPP waste management method introduced by the former Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has failed to live up to expectation. Lagos is filthy.

We can all see that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has become ineffective. Rather, the LASTMA officers have turned themselves to touts. The Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offences had to suspend one paramilitary officer attached to the unit for taking N30,000 bribe on Monday.

Investigation reveals that there is break down of laws and orders in some agencies as staff and officials engage in nefarious activities to extort members of the public as the present administration winds down.

Most times, LASTMA officials hide under the shed instead of controlling traffic. Many civil servants have relaxed. The levels of productivity and efficiency have fallen.

These aresome of what Sanwo-Olu will have to address after his inauguration. He willneed to win the hearts of the civil servants to his side. He has served underthree administrations and this should be his strength.

Nobody gave Fashola any chance but his arrival in 2007 signified a new look for Lagos with “Greene” programme with massive planting of flowers and trees. Fashola rehabilitated under bridges, turned it to relaxation parks. He ensured the quick take off of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and LAGBUS.

Many of these rehabilitation centres were never maintained by the present administration of Ambode. Sanwo-Olu will have to reinvent this to bring back the beautification scheme of Fashola’s administration.

Ambode did alot in the area of building laybys to ease traffic jams. He built pedestrianbridges to reduce carnage on major roads. Sanwo-Olu should look at this andimprove on it.
