No fewer than 16 people have been killed in a fresh clash between herdsmen and farmers in Benue state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Police Command, Moses Yamu who confirmed the killings aid that it happened on Monday.
President Muhammadu Buhari visited Benue and some other violent hit states on Monday but it seemed this did not stop the crisis.
According to Yamu, the herdsmen killed mostly women and children in the attack.
He said it was a reprisal attack by the herdsmen on the farmers who had earlier attacked the herders in which many of their cows were injured.
Yamu stated that a member of the staff of the local government had informed the police that some irate youths of the community engaged the herdsmen in a clash, which led to the killings of the 16.
He said, “15 of the deceased were children and women while one herdsman was also killed.”
Early this year, 73 people of Benue were killed by herdsmen and buried by the state government.
