Buhari Cannot Singlehandedly Take Decision On Restructuring – Presidency
The presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot alone take decision on the issue of restructuring being agitated for by some opinion leaders.
The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the president, Malam Garba Shehu said this while reacting to the critics on the nationwide broadcast of Mr. Buhari.
He said that the country was not under military rule where decision could be taken by the head of state without consultation.
President Buhari had said in his speech that only the National Assembly has the right to discourse the issue of restructuring and that he would only work with them based on the constitution.
Calling on opinion leaders to restrain themselves from making utterances that could heat up the polity, Shehu said Buhari’s critics had taken it too far to describe the president as enemy of the country.
“To critique the president for not responding to restructuring of the country – whatever that means – is completely off the mark,” he said.
According to Shehu, change does not just come in democracy, it takes a process between the representatives of the people in the National Assembly and their elected president to agree on issue.
President Buhari is constitutionally bound to work with the National Assembly to deal with such complex issues and he will not take decision arbitrarily.
