Buhari, Tinubu And Their Marriage of Convenience
ElevateNews takes a look at the marriage of convenience between Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari.
Will I say it is President Muhammadu Buhari that has compromised his principle to accommodate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu or it is the former Lagos State Governor that is tolerating the president?
Either way, both of them must have compromised in one way or the other to be able to sit together.
Tinubu was nearly rubbished in Buhari’s first term but the president quickly retraced his step to obey the party’s agenda.
The president agreed with Tinubu to sack the former APC National Chairman Chief Odigie Oyegun and bring in the former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
Buhari agreed with Tinubu that the party must choose the leadership of the National Assembly.
Unarguably, APC through Oshiomhole has enforced its rules on the members of the party and this is resulting in some internal crises within the party.
A good example is a rancour between Oshiomhole and his successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State.
A similar thing happened between the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and the party.
The inner caucus of the Lagos APC forced Ambode out of the office and brought in Babajide Sanwo-Olu who is more or less an errand boy for now.
The cabals that surround Buhari has made it difficult for the APC mafia to totally subdue the president to the party’s idea.
This is where Tinubu and Oshiomhole have to define their loyalty either through compromising their personal agenda or tolerating the rigidity of a former soldier.
As it is, the team that is leading this country, for now, are men with three lives; secret, private and public.
While these politicians present themselves as a saint to us at public functions and beam their teeth both to their enemies and friends, many of them live a dirty private life, a lot of which are not open to the media.
We talk about their children and wives, their concubines and mistresses and infringing on their private lives. How many cars they hide and which schools have they enrolled their children.
We write about the food they eat and how they relax within and outside Nigeria.
Yet, there are secrets they keep among themselves. They engage in fetish and spiritual activities that will not make them trust themselves.
The association that is not comfortable enough for Mr. President to shake hands with the wife of his party national leader, Senator Oluremi Tinubu cannot be described as a holy One.
The association that suspects every one of the media reports that emanate from Tinubu’s owned media outfit, the Nation Newspaper and TVC cannot be tagged a holy one. It is laced with suspicion.
This association is a marriage of convenience. It is fragile and may break up any moment. Time will tell.
