Buhari Vs Atiku; The Debate That May Never Happen

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the probability of having President Muhammadu Buhari and Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for a debate towards the 2019 presidential election.

How I wish the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, President Muhammadu Buhari and his counterpart for the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar can debate on how to grow the country, it would have created ample opportunities for the electorate to pitch their tents before the 2019 poll.

This is a dream that may not come to reality. The electorate will have to depend on what they have read and heard about the two candidates as a guide to choose at the poll.

In the last three and a half years, Nigerians have seen how far the present administration can go in revamping a battered economy. Nigerians are not better.

The rate of unemployment is growing higher by the day; the quality of education has not improved; civil servants cry for the minimum wage increase. It has been a period of promises without fulfilment.

Amidst all these, President Buhari’s toga of integrity is being beautified, even when there are hundreds of unanswered questions by his government over some inadequacies.

In his cabinet are men and women of shady characters but the president tolerated them all except the former Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun who resigned for using fake exemption certificate of the National Youths Service Corps.

A serving Minister of Communication, Dr Adebayo Shittu was alleged of circumventing national service. He owned up but refused to quit the Buhari’s cabinet. Our president is a saint that is working with sinners.

Before he crossed to the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku was a saint in APC. Highly respected until the cabals in Aso Rock realized that he was interested in Buhari’s seat.

Atiku never denied this anyway, he had always wanted the presidential seat. However, he is tagged as one of the most corrupt but not convicted Nigerians. While Buhari enjoys his present position as a man of integrity, Atiku is battling with the image problem.

In the next few months when the campaign by the two candidates and their parties will hot up, the old songs will be reechoed about how Atiku had allegedly stolen and doled out dollars. The song of how the former vice president has become a prostitute on the path of realizing his presidential ambition.

We will be reminded that Atiku is not wanted in the US and that he cannot travel to America because he is an alleged fraudster. Yet, a part of the country and a political party wants him to rule.

The former vice president has tried so much to launder his image but no way. The power that be, including his former boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo would always describe him as unfit for the most exalted Nigeria seat.

Becoming the candidate of PDP on Saturday unarguably gave Atiku the opportunity to tell the whole world why he is better qualified than the man of integrity, “Buhari” as Nigeria’s president.

That is why it will be necessary that the two engage in a national debate where questions ranging from integrity and capacity to turn the country around will be asked.
