Champions League: Leverkusen 2-4 Atletico Madrid

Recent two time losing finalists, Atletico Madrid made a strong claim to their chances of qualifying for the quarter finals as they scored 4 away goals to take charge of their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.

Atletico haven’t been as dominant in this season as in recent seasons domestically but their form in Europe has been at the excellent level they have become accustomed to.

A stunning strike by Saul Niguez gave Atletico the lead as he picked up the ball on the right side of the pitch before cutting inside and curling a left-footed shot into the top corner.

Frenchman Antoine Griezmann scored the second goal which doubled their advantage after Kevin Gameiro squared a sweet pass after woeful defending from Omer Toprak, Leverkusen skipper.

Karim Bellarabi scored early in the second half to reduce the deficit but a penalty by Gameiro restored Atletico’s two-goal lead

An own goal by Atletico defender Stefan Savic’ made the scores 2-3 before substitute Fernando Torres nodded in a late goal.

All now seems set for Atletico to qualify for the next round as they have a 2 goal cushion to defend and also the luxury of 4 away goals.
