Court Jails Rape Victim 'Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz' For 30 Years in El Salvador

A judge in El Salvador has jailed a 19-year-old girl who is a serial rape victim for not reporting her case to the authority.

The lady, Evelyn Beatriz Hernandez Cruz was 18 when she suffered sexual abuse and consequently became pregnant in the process.

She later had a stillbirth, a condition described as abortion and illegal in all circumstances by El Salvador Government.

According to judge, Cruz was jailed because she refused to make complaint of her ordeal until she technically committed infanticide.

The judge explained that Cruz was supposed to have sought prenatal care when she became pregnant from the rape.

The former high school student did not realise that she was pregnant, according to Amnesty International reports.

Amnesty report also showed that the girl could not report the rape case because of fear and stigmatization.

“She didn’t report the rapes out of fear, but the hospital that received her had reported the stillbirth to authorities,” Amnesty International says.

Medical experts could not determine if the foetal death happened before or after delivery, according to the human rights body.

“El Salvador’s anti-abortion law is causing nothing but pain and suffering to countless women and girls and their families,” Amnesty’s Americas director, Erika Guevara-Rosas, said in a statement.
