Customs Allegedly Kill Four Innocent Persons While Chasing Rice Smugglers

The officers of the Nigerian Customs Service allegedly killed four persons at Alagbado area of Lagos on Thursday while chasing rice smugglers who passed through that route.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the officers drove in to Moshalashi Bus Stops, Alagbado at 7am, shooting sporadically in an attempt to apprehend the smugglers.

However, the NIS killed four people, three of them were commercial motorcycle operators and another man popularly known as Saheed in their aborted operation.

“They could not lay hands on any of the smugglers but they killed four people, including one Saheed whose wife is pregnant,” one of the angry mob in the area said.

Besides the four casualties, our correspondent learnt that several people were injured while trying to dodge from the customs bullets.

Meanwhile commercial motorcyclists in the area trooped to the street, seeking a revenge but could not see any of the customs officers who had since fled.

The angry mobs destroyed many public properties and were about to storm an Oando Petrol Station where the customs officers usually station their vehicles when the men of the Rapid Response Squad showed up.

It took the intervention of the RSS to stem the mayhem in the area on Thursday.

However, efforts to get the Customs’ spokesman, Uche Ejesieme’s reaction failed.

But in her comment the Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, said only one person was reported killed and it happened around Ajegunle in Alakuko Area of the state.

She confirmed that the customs officers were chasing some smugglers when bullet hit a passerby who died instantly.
