Double Trouble For Samson Siasia

By  |

This is not the best hours for the former Super Eagles player and coach, Samson Siasia.

The World football governing body, FIFA has slammed the former Super Eagles forward with life ban over allegation of matchfixing.

He said that he would clear his name in the whole mess, adding that FIFA did not contact him before placing the ban.

On Saturday, Siasia addressed the press to clear his name but this may not bring him back to the game he so much loved.

It is over a month now that Mrs Beauty Siasia, mother of Samson had been abducted by gunmen with nobody in the football World coming out to empathise with the former footballer.

The kidnappers had demanded a N50 million ransom. This is the second time the old mother would be abducted before FIFA came with another devastating letter, banning Siasia from football.

The letter said that the former footballer must not participate in anything relating to football in his lifetime.

How I wished this never happened. From the looks of things, could it be that Siasia was desperate to free her mother from the den of kidnappers?

Was he pushed into matchfixing with a betting firm to raise money so that he could free his mother?

Or has he been in the act of match-fixing over a long time before nemesis caught up with him?

All these and many other questions are beggging for answers.

Siasia can appeal the case at the Court of Arbitration for Football but this situation at hands go beyond the former coach.

It is a national shame that one of the Nigeria quality coaches has been banned for life by FIFA at the time his mother is languishing in kidnappers’ den.

Siasia paid his dues to this country as a player and coach. His World Cup goal against Argentina in USA 94 was one of the best at the tournament.

He was very good at scouting for quality players in the domestic league to represent the country at the World level compared to other coaches.

He discovered most of the homebased talents that grew to become leaders in the Senior national team.

Siasia as a footballer won Gold in 1994 African Cup of Nation in Tunisia, Silver in Algiers 1990. He also won Bronze at different times.

As a player, he won Bronze at Under 21 World Cup in Moscow for Nigeria and as a coach, he won Silver for Nigeria at the Under 21 World Cup stage and Olympic Bronze for Nigeria.

Clearly, he is as successful as the late Stephen Keshi who won AFCON as a player and coach in 1994 and 2013 respectively.

Before now, I have thought that Siasia would one day bounce back to replicate what he did at the world stage for under 21 in Super Eagles.

But it is unfortunate that FIFA came against Siasia at this time.

I want to believe that the football governing body must have carried out a thorough investigation before concluding on Siasia whom I know is not loved by the current football administration in Nigeria.

Siasia, like many other indigenous coaches, do not believe in the hiring of foreign coaches. This does not go well with Amaju Pinnick-led Nigeria Football Federation body.

Samson Siasia applied to coach Cameroon national team but failed. He would have joined the likes of Keshi and Emmanuel Amuneke who once coached national teams of Togo and Tanzania respectively.

Besides Siasia now, the only promising coach with FIFA licence is Emmanuel Amuneke. Of course, we also have former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, I do not think he has the ability of Siasia when it comes to scouting quality local players.
