EFCC Goes After Varsities VCs Over N5.7m Furniture Allowance
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is out to probe Vice-Chancellors of some Federal universities for allegedly collecting about N480, 000 as furniture allowance monthly.
This was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
He said that the anti-graft agency will be probing the financial impropriety of the vice chancellors and their bursars and would ensure that they are prosecuted.
Prof. Rasheed who was speaking at a workshop on economic recovery and growth for bursars of Federal universities in Abuja said that the affected dons flouted the financial regulations regularly.
He stated that some vice chancellors received more than their salaries and that they would be probed to explain why it is so.
According to him, many Federal universities allow their Vice-Chancellors (VCs) to collect about N480,000 furniture allowance and N90,000 Duty Tour Allowance when top civil servants in the Education ministry collect about N20,000 as Duty Tour Allowance.
He stated that the EFCC would begin investigating the vice chancellors and their bursars this week, adding that the Chairman of EFCC had since booked appointment with them for questioning.
He said that the government never allocated N5.77 million as furniture allowance to any vice chancellor but that their bursars had continually released to the affected VCs the sum of N480, 000 monthly as furniture allowance.
“This is wrong and it has to be probed. Magu will be visiting me and we will arrange how EFCC will have appointment with the VCs and their bursars.
