Ekiti Police Stray Bullet Or Attempted Murder?

Nigeria News takes a look at the uproar that greeted APC at the Ekiti rally.

At present, the All Progressives Congress, APC has put its campaign on hold in Ekiti, pending the return of peace to the state, following Friday’s shooting.

A mobile policeman has pulled the trigger during the flag-off of the gubernatorial campaign by the APC, killing one and injuring one. The former member of the House of Representatives, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele was shot in the arm while a party supporter was shot in the chest.

The unidentified cop said he shot repeatedly to disperse the hoodlums who had infiltrated the political rally as they were trying to waylay dignitaries but unfortunately his bullet went astray.

In the first place, must the policeman shoot life bullet to disperse the crowd of hoodlums? The gathering was a political rally and expectedly political thugs would hang around to hail their paymasters.

That was what happened on Friday but the police failed woefully to control the crowd. The rally that began in Akure, Ondo State Capital in peace ended in chaos in Ado-Ekiti, Capital of Ekiti State.

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu had accosted his friend, the Ekiti State APC governorship candidate, Kayode Fayemi to Ekiti.

In a carnival-like convoy, Fayemi’s supporters entered Ado-Ekiti amidst the mammoth crowd of admirers and supporters but their jubilation was short-lived as gunshots rented the air. The crowd deserted the venue. Fayemi has escaped out the place but Bamidele sustained a gun wound.

Perhaps that was why the Ekiti APC described the situation as a plot to assassinate its candidate, Fayemi.

The party has now instructed that the campaign is stopped to allow it carry out a thorough investigation on the shootings.

It was gathered that the policeman who shot had drunk. Some of the crowd at the rally testified that the cop had earlier been cautioned by one of his superiors who came around the place for his misbehaviour.

An APC supporter told our correspondent that the riffle of the policeman should have been collected after it was discovered that he had drunk.

“Yet, he was left with the gun to wreak havoc on Friday,” the party member who simply identified himself as Michael said.

APC had alleged that the shooting was a plot by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to kill Fayemi but God did not allow it to succeed.

In its swift response, the Peoples Democratic Party denied the allegation as it charged the APC to produce evidence of an attempt to kill Fayemi.

Two weeks ago, some hoodlums besieged the streets of Ekiti to destroy every billboard that carried Fayemi’s picture.

This made the Nigeria Police deploy its men to the state to ensure peace before, during and after the election. The PDP is bent on retaining power while the APC is working assiduously to reclaim the state.

The claim of the PDP is that it is not in control of the police and would not have planted a policeman at APC rally to take out Fayemi.
