Ex-Vice President Ekwueme Dies In London Clinic
Ex-Vice President Dr Alex Ekwueme is dead. His brother, Laz Ekwueme said this on Sunday night.
He said that the former vice president died in London clinic at about 10 pm on Sunday night at the age of 85.
Part of a statement released by the family read, “Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON.
Ekwueme, an architect was elected Nigerian vice president in 1979, the position he occupied till 1984 before the military took over.
About three weeks ago, he was rushed to a Memfys Neurosurgery Hospital Enugu, after he had slumped in his Independence Layout Enugu residence.
Ekwueme was later flown abroad for quality medicals but he died last night.
Ekweme was a scholar and in his time he attended King’s College; Lagos for his secondary school education, the University of London; the University of Strathclyde, University of Washington and the Nigerian Law School.
He is the Ide of the Oko kingdom in Anambra State, where his younger brother, Lazarus, is the traditional ruler.
