African legend, Former captain and coach of the super eagles of Nigeria, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi is dead.

The sporting great passed on in the early hours of today, Wednesday 8th June 2016 at the age of 54 in Benin city Edo state.

He is reported to have died of a cardiac arrest after complaining of leg pains and an irregular heartbeat to family members last week.

This comes as big shock and is a very sad day for the Nigerian Football Federation who announced his death on their twitter handle in the early hours of today. He is not only mourned by the footballing community but by the sports community and the nation at large.

Keshi is one of only 2 people to have picked the African Cup of Nations as a player and a coach.

He led the super eagles to the title in a memorable final in Tunisia in 1994 against Cote d’ Voire. He was also part of the squad at the world cup in USA where Nigeria narrowly missed out on a quarter final place.

He had three stints as the coach of the super eagles where he picked the nations cup in 2013. He led Nigeria also to the last 16 at the world cup in Brazil.

He also coached the national teams of Togo and Mali.

He lost his wife, Kate Keshi last year after a protracted battle with cancer and it is said he never recovered from losing her.

He is survived by his mum and four children.
