Herdsmen Destroy UNILORIN Research Farm

Multimillion naira research of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State has been destroyed by unknown herdsmen, the institution Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem has narrated.

He disclosed this during a security meeting with the state police command, the Civil Defence Corps and leadership of the Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association on Monday.

He said that the herdsmen always invaded the research farm to graze their cattle and had since destroyed crops worth millions of naira.

Abdulkareem warned the herdsmen to desist from this crime as he called on them to vacate the university land immediately.

According to the vice chancellor, cassava tubers are always uprooted by the herdsmen to feed their cattle, adding, “This is unfair because the university has spent a lot of money on the farm.”

Commenting, the Chairman of MACBAN, Usman Adamu stated that the herdsmen that destroyed the crops did not live with them but that they had migrated from elsewhere.

“We don’t know them. We have been living peacefully in this community with our hosts and we also provide security against kidnapping in this area,” Adamu.

He pleaded with the university management to give MACBAN some time to fish out the perpetrators of the crime.
