Herdsmen Pay Compensation To Anambra Farmers

Some farmers whose crops were destroyed by herdsmen in Anambra State have been receiving compensations from the herdsmen.

The South East zonal chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN, Alhaji Idris Sadiq Gidado made this known on Wednesday, adding that the herdsmen would be paying over N137, 000 as compensation to the crop farmers.

However, the state Governor, Willie Obiano has given the herdsmen 14-day-ultimatum to pay up the compensation.

Gidado stated that the association would definitely pay the compensation, saying that only Ufuma community had outstanding compensation that would be paid in the next five days.

“We have paid compensation to Ezeagu, Okija, Aguleri, Omo, Mbaukwu and Ayamelum and a few others,” Gidado said.

According to him, the cattle breeders had entered into an agreement with the farmers on how the compensation would be paid.

Meanwhile, an amalgamation of Igbo progressives, have rejected any form of a colony, open grazing or grazing bills for cattle in Igbo land.

But Governor Obiano had also called on the communities where about 100 cows were said to have been killed last year to pay compensation to the herdsmen.

He said that 78 cows were lost instead of 100 reported by the herdsmen with each costs N50, 000. He told the affected communities to pay for the 78 cows.

According to him, the agreement was reached by the leadership of the association, cattle owners, community leaders, leaders of farmers association and government.
