Nigeria News takes a look at the chance of Super Eagles in the ongoing AFCON

It was a Five-Goal Thriller in the match between Super Eagles and Indomitable Lions on Saturday as Nigeria ran away with 3 – 2 victory over Cameroon.

Indeed, one of the high profile games that saw Nigeria scoring first in the 19th minutes through Odion Ighalo’s low shot that deflected into the Cameroonian net.

However, the Indomitable Lions came stronger towards the end of the first half, scoring twice in five minutes to put Nigeria behind.

The eagles rekindled Nigeria’s hope in the second half when Ighalo struck again for an equalizer and laid one of the deadly passes in the tournament to the Arsenal forward, Alex Iwobi for a deafening goal that sank the Cameroonians.

Eagles Have been the Achilles heel of the lions in the last few years. Eagles stopped the lions from qualifying for the 2018 World cup in Russia.

With 4-0 drub in Uyo and 1-1 draw in Yaounde, Nigeria closed the door against Cameroon from qualifying for the World Cup.

Saturday’s encounter between these two West African Football powerhouse saw the lions roaring but the Eagles fought in the air, caging and dominating the current champions.

It was a day the host country, Egypt was also sent packing by South Africa. Shocking, the Bafana Bafana silenced the Pharaohs of Egypt and created a date with the Super Eagles in the quarterfinals.

The Eagles and Bafana were in the same group during the AFCON qualifier in which Nigeria emerged the best and closely followed by South Africa.

But the Bafana Bafana beat the Super Eagles in Uyo when both first met by 2-0 while Nigeria failed to revenge the defeat in Johannesburg.

Of course, both teams have improved tremendously after the qualifier and with the defeat of the host nation, Egypt, the tournament becomes more open among other favourites, including Nigeria and Senegal.

The Giant Killer, South Africa is expected to face Nigeria with full confidence, having defeated Egypt.

The Bafana Bafana will like to hit Nigeria hard when they meet.

Nigeria, on the other hand, has shown the class that its attack could be dangerous for any defense.

The Eagles’ attack has the capacity to create chances, which if it can convert the opportunities, South Africa may find it difficult to contain the three-time African Champions.

However, the Eagles’ central defense is lacking in quality. In the game against Madagascar, the Eagles defense was exposed and again in the first half of the match against Cameroon.

The defense is shaky. South Africa, with the pace of its attackers, should be able to punish Nigeria on this.

The Bafana did this against Eagles in Uyo during the qualifier.

The quarterfinals against the Bafana Bafana is going to be a game of wits between Gernot Rohr and the Coach of South Africa.

If Nigeria must win, it must impose its pattern on South Africa, create chances and ensure that the fast-moving Bafana Bafana are not given any chance to stroll into its 18yard box.

I see South Africa playing exactly like Madagascar, which to me should be an advantage for the Eagles, having faced such kind of opposition before.

The South Africa should also see the Eagles game as a big advantage.

Having beaten Eagles in the qualifying games, this should spur the Bafana Bafana to break the jinx against Nigeria in a tournament of this nature.
