How To Stop Kanu’s Biafra Agitation – Prof. Ben Nwabueze
A leader of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Professor Ben Nwabueze (SAN) has posited that only restructuring of the country’s federal structure can stop leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu and his group from agitating for Biafra Republic.
He said this when leaders from southern part of the country met on Thursday, where they demanded for a new constitution that should emerge through referendum to restructure the country.
However, in a swift reaction, Kanu said that restructuring might not solve the problem if it would not remove all injustices that the Igbo people had been facing in Nigeria.
Nwabueze said that Kanu had authorized him to tell the gathering that if restructure would come, he would persuade the IPOB members to sheath their swords over agitation for Biafra state.
The Ohanaeze leader said that IPOB would not disrupt any election in Southeast if only the government would toe the line of restructuring the country.
“So, anybody who is opposing restructuring is the one breaking Nigeria, not Nnamdi Kanu,” he said.
Recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari made it clear during his nationwide broadcast that the issue of restructuring could only be debated by the National Assembly lawmakers who are the true representatives of the people.
Nwabueze and other southeast leaders disagreed with Buhari, saying that the restructuring could come through referendum, adding that anybody who would not support restructuring is enemy of the country.
But Kanu said that restructuring is too late now and that the restoration of Biafra Republic is not negotiable. “It must come. It is a reality,” he said.
