Tragedy struck on Sunday at Elegushi Beach, Lagos when two students of the University of Lagos were allegedly drowned.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the postgraduate students had gone for picnic with their friends and had to swim at the beach when the untoward incident occurred.

According to their friend, Ginika Okolo who gave the account of how it happened, the two students Funmi 24, and Shola, 27, were swept away by high tide at the beach.

Funmi and Shola graduated from Covenant University but could not complete their Masters degree programme at the University of Lagos where they both studied International Relations and Diplomacy.

Meanwhile, friends of these two girls have taken to social media to criticize the management of Elegushi Beach who could not provide the necessary safety for picnickers.

The friends requested for compensation from the management of Elegushi Beach, stating that Funmi and Shola would have not died if there was rescue team in place.

“The management supposed to provide alarm bell, rescue team as the Funmi and Shola were crying for help. But no one could rescue them, “one of the friends said on twitter.

The bodies of the deceased had since been deposited at Elegushi General Hospital Morgue and according to report, the parents of the two students had visited the place to claim it.

Confirming the tragedy, the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Police Command, Dolapo Badmus, said the case was reported at Elegushi Police Station on Monday.
