IBB’s Letter: Afegbua As Sacrificial Lamb
Nigeria News takes a look at the statement released by the media aide of the former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida and the turns of events.
A leopard cannot change its spot. Former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida was nicknamed “Maradona” because of his slippery character.
He is beginning to manifest the trait in the last 48 hours. Leadership does not change a person but it reveals who he is. However, IBB is charismatic and loved by many despite this behaviour.
Every politician wants to own IBB because of his alluring attitude. He is a good listener and very good at identifying talents. In spite of all these, the former Head of State is brutish judging by his shady dealings and alleged killings while in power.
There is no doubt that Babangida has hands in the statement released by his spokesman, Prince Kazeem Afegbua in which President Muhammadu Buhari was asked to quit the presidential seat after this first term.
This is not the first time Afegbua would be releasing a statement on behalf of Babangida and as astute as he is the media aid would always seek the input of his boss before going to the press.
So whenever Afegbua visits a newsroom, he is synonymous to Babangida. The story always hit the front page. But on Sunday, Shortly after the news hit the airwave and online platform that Babangida wanted Buhari out in 2019, a counter statement was released carrying the same signature of the former military ruler.
In the second statement, the “Maradonic” Babangida easily debunked the first statement, saying he never instructed Afegbua to release any statement.
On Channel Television, Afegua had to defend himself and at the same time find a way to defend his boss, Babangida over the letter.
He said that the second letter was written by Babangida’s friends who are also allies to Buhari. “His friends wrote the statement, not Babangida,” Afegbua said.
He explained that Babangida had called him to say that the first statement stands. Afegbua stated that he was with Babangida to articulate his thought before writing the statement and had done so for 14 years with the former Head of State.
The question is, who is lying between Afegbua and Babangida? A former military ruler who has refused to give vivid reasons why the June 12, 1993 presidential election was cancelled.
Babangida whose letter bomb killed Publisher of Newswatch, Dele Giwa, a renowned investigative journalist Nigeria ever produced but denied till today of having hands in the death.
Unlike former President Olusegun Obasanjo who released a statement and stood by it, waiting for the consequence, Babangida has a way of hiding behind a smiling mask.
Above all, Afebgua has been asked to report himself to the police within 24 hours for allegedly releasing a fake statement.
The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris said in a statement that the police would arrest Afegbua if after 24 hours ultimatum he did not turn himself up for interrogation.
Working for Babangida, I learnt could be good but when the former military ruler is overwhelmed by forces around him, he can easily sacrifice a friend. Afegbua, a fresh sacrificial lamb.
