IDPs Stop Camp Officials From Diverting Relief Materials
Thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) on Tuesday stopped the officials of the International Market Camp, Makurdi where they are being accommodated from diverting relief materials.
The IDPs trooped out of their sheds as they sighted 2 Hilux vans, a truck, a bus and a saloon car loaded with relief materials and about to leave the camp early Tuesday.
Some of the IDPs who spoke to our correspondent alleged that the camp officials had connived with the security guards to steal relief materials and move it to unknown destination.
They said that for about three days now, the IDPs had not been provided with adequate food, yet the officials had been moving food items out of the camp.
The visibly angry protesters sang various songs which accused the entire camp officials of diverting relief materials and abandoning them to die of hunger.
When asked where the materials were being taken to, one of the drivers of the vehicles could not respond. Also none of the security guard could say anything as they kept mute during the protest.
An IDP, who identified himself as Sunday said that the officials always treated them like slaves and that they gathered the courage to stop them because the state Governor Samuel Ortom had warned against diversion of relief material during his visit to the camp a few weeks ago.
“In this camp, only few people sleep on mattresses, but we are not complaining. We are suffering, but because of the situation at hand, we understand with the government. But the camp officials have gone too far this time.
