IGP Orders Removal of Illegal Road Blocks Nationwide
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris has ordered the dismantling of illegal road blocks across the country.
In a statement made available to our correspondent and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood, the IGP deployed a Special X-Squad Teams nationwide to carry out the exercise.
On the list of such structure to remove is unlawful revenue/tax collectors working for the various transport unions like the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
The police boss said that is unlawful for anybody to set up structure and blockage on the highway, thereby obstructing free movement of the citizens.
The statement also empowered the X-Squad Teams to arrest, investigate and prosecute any person or group of persons found committing this illegal act.
“It is unlawful and contrary to the laws for any individual or group under any name to take laws into their hands and block any road or highway in full or any part of it under the guise of collection of revenue/tax or enforcement of the interests of such organizations.”
The statement, however called on all road transport union, local government tax collectors and their boards to desist from illegally blocking the roads for the purpose of collecting tax from motorists.
The police said that it had taken this step due to the various complaints it had received from citizens and that some of the illegal structures were being used as avenues to harbour armed robbers and kidnappers.
The statement also enjoined parents and guardians to monitor their children and wards from being used as tax collectors in the guise of employment.
