Impeachment: Don’t Impeach Buhari, Gowon Warns
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd) has warned the National Assembly against any plan to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said this when members of the Northern Leaders and Stakeholders Assembly, NLSA, paid him a courtesy visit, adding that removing Buhari would not augur well for the country growing democracy.
To Gowon, disagreement will always happen in a democracy, which will be resolved but the impeachment option should not be embraced to settle issues.
Gowon spoke against the backdrop of the submission of a report on the motion for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over the purchase of $496 million Tucano Aircraft without legislators’ approval.
Gowon noted that it would be too early to impeach the president in Nigeria, adding that the country is still learning when it comes to democracy and should not be in a hurry to take some advance decision against elected officials now.
He called on the different groups in the North to come together to project a common front, adding that too many groups could send wrong signals to other parts of the country.
Chairman of the Forum and former Presidential adviser, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai in his remarks said the group was committed to sustainable peace and harmonious co-existence of all ethnic nationalities in the country.
