Insecurity: Funke Olakunrin As Sacrificial Lamb

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the turn of events after the death of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The Akure residence of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the leader of Pan Yoruba Socio-political group, Afenifere has become the nearest destination of political elites mostly of the Southwest extinction in the last three days.

Fasoranti is bereaved. His daughter, Funke Olakunrin was killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen near Ore, while coming from Akure at the weekend.

The politicians were in Akure to pay condolence visits to the 94-year-old Fasoranti. The nonagenarian said that he never knew that his daughter’s last visit to Akure was to bid him goodbye to this world.

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi who visited earlier on Saturday said that the death of Olakunrin was a personal loss to him, adding that the deceased was so close to him.

According to Fayemi, the late Olakunrin was with him a day before the attack and her consequent murder. He noted that it is high time all stakeholders come together to fight insecurity in the country.

The former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olufemi Mimiko expressed his displeasure with the lack of effective security in Nigeria, lamenting that the death of Olakunrin should be thoroughly investigated and perpetrators brought to justice.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said that by the death of Olakunrin, Nigeria has been so diminished, calling on the government to review its security system. He bemoaned the attitude of the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari towards security.

The former Lagos State Governor and National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said that Olakunrin’s death was a personal loss to him.

However, he warned Nigerians not to narrow the suspected killers to herdsmen, adding that there are many criminals who now perpetrate evils in the guise of herdsmen.

But the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde protested that the death of Olakunrin should not be politicized as he called on the Inspector General of Police to do all within his power to apprehend the killers.

In a telephone conversation, President Muhammadu Buhari consoles Pa Fasoranti with the pledge to fish out the killers of his daughter.

Many had died in the den of kidnappers in this country that were never reported because the victims were unpopular.

The notorious kidnapper, “Evans” is not a herdsman but he brought tears into many homes. Evans gangs kidnapped and killed for ransom until the police apprehended them.

The criminal gangs have found kidnapping so lucrative now in this country. As the Economic and Financial Crime Commission is making headway on internet fraud, “Yahoo Boys”, the perpetrators are taking into kidnapping.

At present, they go after the relatives of politicians and business mogul to make big ransom.

It is unfortunate that Olakunrin has been sacrificed for a sin she did not commit. It is also ridiculous that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae suffered in the hands of kidnappers who were apprehended and found to be Fulani herdsmen.

That it is only in Yorubaland that the elites and their children are being targeted to settle political scores speaks more of the failure of the Southwest State governors to protect their own elder statesman.

Recently, the governors met in Ibadan, Oyo State for a security summit and pledged to provide better security for the residents.

Is this the kind of security they have promised in which Fulani herdsmen have turned the nooks and crannies of the Southwest to their hideouts?
