IPOB: Saraki Meets With Southeast Senators
President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki entered a marathon meeting with his colleagues from the southeast to discuss the designation of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB as terrorist organization.
Last week, the Nigerian Army pronounced IPOB as a terrorist group while governors of the southeast proscribed the activities of the Biafra activists in the region.
Saraki, however deferred when he said that the declaration of the IPOB as terrorist organization was unconstitutional and illegal. He called on the Federal Government to follow normal process in taking such action.
The senate president who had since being criticized by his words on Tuesday met with senators from the southeast at the residence of the Deputy Senator Ike Ekweremadu to discuss the way forward.
According to a source, the key issues tabled by Saraki was how the senators from southeast would support the government in ensuring a lasting peace in the region.
The source said that despite the disagreement of Saraki on the procedure of declaration of IPOB as terrorist group, the senate president maintained that the IPOB activities must be controlled.
The Nigerian Army deployed Operation Python Dance II to maintain law and order in Abia State due to the activities of IPOB last week, a situation that generated discordant views among prominent Nigerians.
