Jide Sanwoolu Battles Akinwunmi Ambode for Lagos Ticket
Additional two (2) gubernatorial candidates under the All Progressives Congress’ umbrella emerged on Tuesday, raising speculations that all was not going well with the incumbent governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the party.
The candidates, who were former commissioners in the state, Dr Obafemi Hamzat and Jide Sanwoolu, were claiming to have Tinubu’s support.
Ambode, the incumbent governor, was also said to have Tinubu’s support when he declared his intention on Monday.
A special visit to the party’s state secretariat on Tuesday did not yield fruit as the office was deserted by party officials.
Nevertheless, some workers at the party’s state secretariat said the trio of Sanwoolu, Hamzat and Ambode were likely to contest the governorship ticket in the direct party primary expected to come up in the next two (2) weeks.
However, reports from some sources revealed that the mandated group controlled by the national leader of the party, Tinubu had endorsed Jide Sanwoolu.
The source said, “Sanwoolu is now the man to beat. Did you see the Lagos APC Chairman, Tunde Balogun, and other big APC chieftains at Ambode’s second-term declaration?”
We also got information from another source said, “The governor (Ambode) got a clearance from Tinubu before picking the party’s nomination form.”
An online news platform, TheCable, on Tuesday claimed 57 council chairmen loyal to Tinubu had met and pledged their support for Sanwoolu.
However, Mr Tunde Rahman, Tinubu’s media aide said the gubernatorial candidates should specify when Tinubu endorsed their candidacy.
Rahman said, “Can you ask the aspirants to tell you when he (Tinubu) endorsed them? Let them tell you when he endorsed them.”
