June 12: Lagos Unveils New MKO Abiola’s Statue
Lagos State Government will mark the Democracy Day with the unveiling of a new statue of the late politician and winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Chief MKO Abiola.
All roads lead to the site of the statue that stands between Ojota and Ketu as the state Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode joins other personalities to inaugurate the statue.
Also, President Muhammadu Buhari will use the occasion of June 12 anniversary to decorate the late politician, Abiola with a posthumous national award of Grand Commander of Federal Republic, GCFR in Abuja.
In Lagos, politicians have been gathering at the statue as early as 9 am, waiting for the government officials to arrive for the unveiling ceremony.
One of the pro-democracy members that fought against the annulment of June 12, 1993 election Shehu Sani who is presently a senator of the Federal Republic, is also in Lagos.
Sani will be delivering a paper at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ June 12 lecture. Sani said on his twitter handle that many of those singing praises of Buhari today had long time abandoned the course of June 12.
As he put it, “Many of them have abandoned June 12 for over 20years.They said it’s dead and they have moved on. They don’t even attend June 12 anniversary events. Suddenly because PMB honoured MKO, they are retrieving their perfidious diaries from the dust and rewriting their history.”
