Kachikwu vs Baru: FG Beefs Up Security At NNPC
The Federal Government has beefed up security at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
Our correspondent observed the heavy presence of soldiers and policemen at the place on Friday.
A source told our correspondent that the security department of NNPC actually requested the place to be beefed up due to Boko Haram’s threat to attack the place sometimes ago.
The source also said that there had been tension due to the recent petition written by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu to President Muhammadu Buhari in which he alleged the Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru of insubordination and award of contracts without approval.
The allegation that Baru awarded about $25 billion contracts without recourse to the board of NNPC by Kachikwu had generated so many reactions that could lead to protest by the Civil Society Organization.
The source stated that the security department of NNPC learnt that some groups had been calling for the suspension of Baru and that they might stage a protest to the NNPC headquarters.
“The government is just being proactive with the deployment of soldiers and policemen in the place to beef security,” the source said.
At present, there are armoured vehicles parked at the two roads that lead to the NNPC headquarters while police patrol vehicles are also stationed there.
