Lagos To Unveil Fela Statue On Allen Junction
Late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti will be honoured by the Lagos State Government as part of activities marking the musician’s 79th posthumous birthday and the 20th anniversary of his death.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde said this in a statement made available to our correspondent on Friday.
The commissioner said that the honour on Fela is in tandem with the vision of the state Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode to immortalize those who had contributed to the good image of Lagos in politics, economics, arts and culture, among whom Fela was one.
The state government had since erected the statue of Fela on the Allen Roundabout, Ikeja and would be unveiled on Sunday, October 15, 2017, to climax a weeklong musical fiesta tagged, “Felabration”.
The Governor will also pay a visit to the Kalakuta Museum on Gbemisola Street, Ikeja where he will join family and Fela devotees in homage to the music icon.
Ayorinde said that the whole activities would be rounded off with music party at the African Shrine, Agidimgbi, Alausa Ikeja.
As the commissioner put it, “Fela did not only capture the global audience as a charismatic and energetic musician using Lagos as his base; he was revered for fighting against corruption and oppression even at the risk of imprisonment or death. His creativity, courage, passion and extraordinary ability to rise against the odds are trademarks of a true Lagosian”.
