Minna Jail Break: 16 Inmates Escape, One Warder Killed
No fewer than 16 inmates of the Minna medium prison, Niger State have escaped after some hoodlums attacked the place on Sunday.
The gunmen gained entrance to the prison through the main gate, killing one of the warders on duty and a commercial motorcyclist, “Okada” operator.
As they shot repeatedly to the prison, part of the wall collapsed, creating thoroughfare for the inmates to escape. It was gathered that the 16 that fled were condemned inmates.
“A warder that was just reporting to work and the motorcyclist that picked him was killed. They went in through the fence,” a source said.
Meanwhile, about 20 of the inmates refused to flee. The bodies of the murdered warder and the commercial motorcyclist had been deposited at the morgue.
The Nigeria Prison Comptroller had not reacted to the incident.
Meanwhile, a prison officer who preferred anonymity told our correspondent that a notorious robber was remanded in the prison about a week ago and had escaped with the 16 inmates.
“I want to believe that the prison was attacked because of the robber that was brought in a week ago. His gangs must have stormed the prison. One of our men was killed,” he explained.
