Monaco Stun Man-City To Reach Last 8 of Champions League
Monaco have done the unthinkable as they stunned English giants, Manchester City 3-1 in Monaco to dump the English side out of the Champions league after a 6-6 aggregate score line.
It looked as though the English side would have what it takes to see out the tie after a first leg 5-3 victory back at the Etihad stadium but Monaco had other plans.
Guardiola had stated before the match that his team will need to score if they were going to have any chance of progressing to the next round. They did but it was not enough as Monaco did what was required to send them into the quarter finals.
The match started with a sign of things to come showing as early as the seventh minute when the excellent Kylian Mbappe poked the ball to score the first goal of the match.
They scored their second via the boots of Fabinho as the signs became clearer of a man City exit.
City gave themselves some hope as they scored to lead on aggregate via Sane after Subasic had parried Sterling’s shot into his path but slack marking from a set-piece allowed Tiemoue Bakayoko to head home the decisive goal.
This marks the first time that manager Pep Guardiola has left the competition at this stage after his successful stints with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
This means that Leicester are the only English representatives in the last eight of the champions league as Monaco, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus make up the other teams.
