Nadal, Djokovic Through To Second Round in Melbourne
Australian open defending champion, and world number 2, Novak Djokovic has reached the second round of the Melbourne tournament after he defeated Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in straight sets.
The match was a very entertaining match as the 12 time grand slam champion grabbed a 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 victory.
Rafael Nadal also went through to the second round after he defeated Germany’s Florian Mayer 6-3 6-4 6-4.
Nadal, the number 9 ranked player in the world coming into this tournament, reached the second round with a commanding display even as he did what was required to avoid a repeat of last years tournament when he lost in the first round.
Nadal has seen his ranking topple due to an injury hit 2016 and he is looking sharp this time as he gets set to make a push for the top rankings.
He has only played just four matches since the US Open in September and the 30 year old is tipped to make an impression on this tournament.
Djokovic will now face either Denis Istomin or Ivan Dodig while Nadal will battle Marcos Baghdatis for a place in the next round.
