NASS Invasion And Calls For Further Probe
Nigeria News takes a look at the calls for further probe of NASS invasion by DSS.
With his latest tweet, requesting President Muhammadu Buhari to set up an Independent Judicial Panel of Inquiry, President of the Senate Bukola Saraki is not yet done with last Tuesday’s siege on National Assembly by the operatives of the Department of State Service.
His request came just a few hours that he met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his presidential library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Saraki is not ready to let go despite that the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had sacked the Director General of the DSS, Lawal Musa Daura.
Of course, Daura had done a wrong job this time even if his intention was to protect the presidency as we learnt from some quarters. He became the sacrificial lamb for the presidency to be the saint in this dirty political game.
At the Senate on Tuesday, only the Peoples Democratic Party senators were in the chambers, most of whom were Saraki’s allies. The PDP senators outside the chambers cried foul and asked for the head of Daura. It was clear that some senators were not carried along as the events unfolded.
The senators from the All Progressives Congress left for Sheraton due to the DSS blockade of NASS. The presidency denied having knowledge of the blockade and that it never instructed Daura to do such.
Daura, a friend of Saraki and a clan of Buhari was eventually sacked by Osinbajo who is neither is friend nor kinsman. We were told that Buhari gave Osinbajo the go-ahead to fire Daura and Saraki put the icing on Osinbajo’s cake during his world press conference.
The President of the Senate commended Osinbajo for acting fast with the dismissal of Daura to save democracy. Saraki has always said that the political imbroglio in the country now is not about him but to save democracy from being hijacked by gangsters.
Daura’s sack, in my view, is a fast one by the presidency to exonerate itself from the mess at the NASS even when facts have shown that the sacked DSS must have acted the script of the All Progressives Congress.
It was gathered that the APC senators actually wanted to remove Saraki and one of the ways to do it was to use the DSS to stop the PDP senators from gaining entrance into the chambers.
However, as it went, the PDP senators got to know about this and had to force themselves into the NASS complex even when the Senate was in a recession.
With what happened at NASS last Tuesday, it appears that APC members played smartly by rearranging its meeting to take place at Sheraton Hotel, making the whole scenario look as if it was Saraki and his friend Daura that masterminded the DSS siege on the NASS.
But the Senate president, after consulting with elders, including former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida and former President Olusegun Obasanjo said that there was a need to inaugurate an Independent Judicial Panel of Inquiry into the NASS invasion.
