The 2023 Political War: Ekiti Draws Battle Line Against Lagos
At the long run, the real battle against National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole will be more revealing ahead of 2023 presidential election.
The gang up against Oshiomhole by some governors and a minister as revealed by himself is a coup to wrestle power from those who are loyal to the National Chairman of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Those Tinubu nurtured to be where they are today are plotting his downfall.
They will always tell you that they do not have anything against Tinubu but their personal ambitions will always make them disagree with the party’s decision on many issues.
The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum is very much interested in the presidential race but may not have the support of Oshiomhole.
Tinubu has not made any official statement of his interest in the 2023 race but his allies most especially from Lagos APC have been sending messages that the former State governor should succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.
There is a new political bloc within APC. This bloc comprises Fayemi, his counterpart for Kaduna, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former Legal Adviser to APC and erstwhile Commissioner for the Environment under Tinubu, Dr. Muiz Banire.
Their plan is to ensure the presidency of Fayemi with El-Rufai as the vice-presidential candidate in 2023.
There is a minister who has been so quiet now but speaks louder behind the scene. He also passed through the tutelage of Tinubu that is working for these new breeds who are set to take over power in 2023.
There were two court cases last week over Oshiomhole’s chairmanship. The Federal High Court, Abuja sacked Oshiomhole while another one in Kano reinstated him.
All this happened within 48 hours to make a mockery of our judiciary. The purported removal of Oshiomhole was welcomed in Ekiti as APC members in the State went into jubilation while his reinstatement brought joy on Lagos APC.
Oshiomhole is seen as the fulcrum between two blocs; the Lagos APC who is set to nominate Tinubu and the Ekitis who want their son to become president.
Fayemi, El-Rufai and the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki are in the killer mood to stop politics of “godfatherism”, which has now become a culture of APC.
But this is not peculiar to this part of the world. There is always serious politicking to get endorsement within the intra-party system.
The only difference I have seen is that we emphasize much on money politics to buy our way through while seeking the party’s endorsement.
This is where the new bloc is scared in that all the members of this new set of politicians cannot push out the funds to popularise their chosen candidate.
Tinubu is a master spender when it comes to politics. He has bankrolled the elections of many of these new gladiators and it will not be difficult to bankroll himself.
To stop him, the new bloc must stop Oshiomhole who also understands money politics.
Oshiomhole may have enjoyed the support of the governors when coming on board as the APC chairman, these governors should remember that somebody dropped the name of Oshiomhole for this position.
That person is Tinubu.
