Nigeria News: Buhari’s Master Stroke

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the President Muhammadu Buhari’s motive of declaring June 12 as democracy day.

I do not want to believe that President Muhammadu Buhari honoured the winners of the June 12, 1993 election, Chief MKO Abiola and his vice, Baba Gana Kingibe with national awards to gain cheap popularity as many have thought.

I think Buhari just put right the wrongs of our heroes past at a time many people least expected. Should Buhari be described as a conman? Perhaps not over the declaration of June 12 as the Democracy Day.

The president had outwitted some of the master political strategists, including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The president had been using the “James Hardly Chase” weapon for those that could challenge his stance in the past.

With the fight against corruption, Buhari has the dossier of almost all those that are working with him. On his palms are their testicles. Criticising a man that has your testicles in his palms could be suicidal. Perhaps that is why Tinubu has been playing along.

Buhari can be brutal if you stand against him, yet he will pretend to know nothing about your travail as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC opens up cases against you.

The police will always pursue you around like Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris is doing to some Buhari’s foes, including President of the Senate, Bukoa Saraki and his stooge, Senator Dino Melaye.

However, with what Buhari did a few days ago, declaring June 12 as Democracy Day and honouring the actors, including the late Human Rights Activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, the president must have learnt the rope.

This is not because he is desperate to have southwest votes but because he is determined to put things right.

We should remove the notion that President Buhari cannot get the type of votes he got in 2015 from the North.

I have witnessed his following in key northern states and I find that this notion which is widespread on social media rather laughable…In fact, he may get more votes.

But we know what social media tries to do…it tries to get into our heads sell and imprint a lie.

So this gesture is not about desperation…I know a lot of people will go down that path and doing that is borne out of being ignorant of what Buhari has done in the last three years.

Under President Goodluck Jonathan the fastest growing sector was servicing…today the fastest growing sector is agriculture and mines.

Under Jonathan the Services sector had grown so much that Nigeria was now thinking of outsourcing its knowledge economy, today agriculture has grown so much that Nigeria is thinking of exporting its farm produce.

What Buhari did was to take government investment out of the hands of South Western small businesses and plough it into Agriculture (this is rather simplistic, things are more complex than that). There is no way Northerners will not deliver block votes for him.

This gesture like I said had the imprimatur of Bola Ahmed Tinubu…it was Tinubu’s block following that was eroded over the last three years by intrigues spearheaded by the likes of Ibikunle Amosun, Babatunde Fashola and Kayode Fayemi…seeing that those efforts to create an alternative political structure in the South West have failed, Tinubu remains the go-to man.

If by way of insinuation it is established he had a hand in these gestures, his stock in the region will rise and the needed numbers from the South West can be harvested.

But all this analysis takes nothing away from the gesture itself…this is the first time since 1993, a space of 25 years that government at the centre had acknowledged that MKO Abiola won those elections and was cheated out of being President (check out the wordings of the statement) that in itself is a major statement.

This is an official recognition Government has conceded that the man should have been sworn in as President but the votes were annulled … President Buhari cannot just decree and announce him as President (let’s be realistic shall we, NEC which conducted the election is defunct, its records are probably sealed and it is not recognized by law), So President Buhari has done the next best thing…
