Nigeria News: Political Power Addicts and Their Antecedents
Nigeria News takes a look at power addicts in Nigeria democratic space.
When Politicians masquerading as Democrats, progressives, patriots or change agents engage in vote-rigging and buying, violence, maiming and killing to snatch political parties’ candidacies and win elections, you have to know and note that they are not doing so because they want to serve the people, society or country. They do so to grab power and use same for primitive accumulation, to loot or loot again the resources of the State. They are no better than armed robbers who use violence to maim and kill. In many ways, they are even worse than armed robbers who use threat, force and violence to dispose of their victims of cherished belongings.
How and why? Unlike the armed robbers who use only the instrumentality of violence, the politicians, in addition to violence, employ deception, falsehood, lies sweet talk and sophistry to gain power, which they knew would be deployed, upon attaining political power, to disempower, dispossess and emasculate the people.
When will the people refuse to allow politicians to use them? Why do the people insist on perishing when they do not lack knowledge?
It is a source of worry for me, each time the so-called leaders who destroyed this country comes out to tell successive governments how to govern.
Who comes to my mind is former President Olusegun Obasanjo who ruled for eight years but failed to fix Lagos-Abeokuta road and Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
He used his power to kill the Alliance for Democracy, the progressive but regional party of the Southwest for him to rule the country.
During Obasanjo’s administration one of the brilliant Yoruba sons who was the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige was killed while Obasanjo made the murder suspect, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Otunba Iyiola Omisore a Senator.
Despite calls that Obasanjo should recognize the winner of the annulled June 12 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, MKO for one day even though he stepped on Abiola’s blood to power, Obasanjo turned a deaf ear to the calls.
Chief Obafemi AWOLOWO is a name you dare not mention in Obasanjo’s presence. He denied Lagos’ LGs allocation despite the Supreme Court Judgement.
Now he said the present government of Muhammadu Buhari has failed even though the present administration is putting effort and resources together to fix the roads Obasanjo could not fix in eight years.
Being supervised by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Federal Executive Council has released N80 billion to complete the Shagamu-Ibadan end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The government also approved funds for the renovation of Third Mainland Bridge, Airport road concession, Marina Government House while Apapa road is being constructed, Oyo Ogbomosho road is receiving attention.
Now, Lagos Ibadan Rail is ongoing. Even Lagos Abeokuta road is been reconstructed while the present administration under Buhari has brought Peace to Ikorodu and returned sanity to AREPO that had been the den of militants and kidnappers for years.
