2019 Election: Wither The Conscience of The Electorate?
Nigeria News takes a look at the electorate ahead of the 2019 general election.
The fiery constitutional lawyer, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi fought with the last strand of his blood vessel against successive despotic rulers in the country. He went to the extent of creating a political platform, the National Conscience Party to wrestle power from the tyrants but was disappointed at the polls.
Before he finally gave up the ghost, the outspoken human rights activist could easily deduce that the Nigerian electorates lacked the conscience. The electorates make the loudest noise about their predicament but will never vote to change the situation, even when they have the opportunity to do so.
Over the years, most Nigerian elites do not vote anymore. They have observed that election is a futile exercise in the country and it does not matter how much they have given to make the change, the politicians who are the owners of political structures will always rig the poll to favour their candidates.
It is interesting that scores of presidential candidates will be going to the 2019 election with President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.
Also in the race is the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. Atiku is seeing as the strongest but not the most credible challenger against the incumbent Buhari.
Currently, Nigerians hardly discuss other candidates from other political parties, which include Fela Durotoye of Alliance for New Nigeria, AAN, Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress, AAC and former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke for the Social Democratic Party, SDP.
These are some of the popular candidates among many others who are interested in Buhari’s seat. Sowore is the publisher of the online medium, Sahara Reporter, Fela Durotoye is a famous motivational speaker whose fans are mostly students and church people.
Duke, a former governor has proved himself in the past and is interested in this higher seat but the fact remains that none of these will get to the position except by miracle.
Nigerian electorates have been boxed to a corner by the political elites who dictate to them which party and who to vote for by seducing them with money.
Office seekers in our country go through hell in the guise that they want to serve. Politicians see service to humanity as a do or die affair.
The political party as a platform is fearfully made. The owners of platforms have their ulterior motives. The office seekers have theirs and electorates too are not left out in the value chain.
Looking critically into the field of play, men with values tend to run away from politics leaving the mean men to control the affairs of good men. Ironically, the evil employs the saint to serve on his terms. No wonder they say when the foundation of a building is defective, the integrity test is nil.
It will be recalled that a group of retired generals imposed Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Nigeria in 1999 just to appeal to the conscience of the Yoruba race whose son, the winner of June 12, 1993 election, Chief MKO Abiola was murdered.
Obasanjo, in turn, and in the bid to compensate his late friend, Musa Yar’Adua went ahead to impose late Umaru Yar’adua to succeed him. Our leaders were handpicked to the detriment of people’s choice. It is one to have aspiration and it is another to be accepted by the owners of political platforms.
