Buhari’s WASC And Sudden Silence of Wailers
Nigeria News takes a look at the issue of President Muhammadu Buhari’s WASC.
The wailers may have laid a precedence in this country. The naysayers were persistent in their request for President Muhammadu Buhari’s West African School Certificate.
They would not stop shouting, including going to court to stop Buhari from contesting without presenting his WASC. “My WASC is with the army,” the president had continued to say.
But the wailers wailed louder, “Let us see a copy from your former school or your personal file.” The wailers queried the integrity of the president over his inability to present WASC.
And for a man who epitomizes integrity, Nigerians will not take anything less than his WASC. The presidency must have been in disarray in the last few weeks, judging by the speed with which it came up with Buhari’s WASC.
On Friday, there was a sudden silence of the wailers on social media as the West African Examinations Council presented the attestation and confirmation of Buhari’s certificate. The Registrar of the council, Dr Iyi Uwadiae was in Aso Rock at a mini ceremony to present the certificate.
There is no doubt that Buhari is educated, having passed through military training that eventually made him acquire the highest ranked soldier in Nigeria at a time. He schooled both at home and abroad and through a coup, Buhari became Nigeria Head of State in 1983.
However, the president is not the eloquent type. He picks his words and speaks gently. His WASC shows that Muhammadu Buhari had credit in English Language but his failure to present the certificate queried his intellectual capacity.
To become Nigerian president, the minimum requirement by the constitution is West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate, which Buhari lacked until yesterday.
It is not the Buhari that had won this debate about WASC but the wailing wailers. They forced the president out of his comfort zone to run after his WASC and got it.
The Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina had described the wailers as naysayers. He could call them anything, I think they have helped democracy and improved the standard on which upcoming leaders will have to build on.
Integrity will not only be measured by your hatred for stealing and looting, but it will also be determined by our readiness to fulfil all requirements in the quest to lead this nation. Buhari just fulfilled another one on Friday to narrow the chances of dubious characters who may want to lead this country with questionable academic records.
Unlike the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the last governorship election in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke whose academic records were tainted with lies and examination malpractices, Buhari was not a cheat in any examination.
There was a sudden silence. So, Buhari actually wrote WASCE and passed. It will be interesting if the WASC submitted by all political office holders and those seeking offices now can be investigated.
Many of them do not have WASC, Nigerians should rise not only against presidential candidates but also councillors and whosoever that is interested in leadership.
