Can Atiku Fight Corruption?

Nigeria News takes a look at the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his capacity to fight corruption.

What if Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party wins the Nigeria presidential seat in 2019, will he be able to fight corruption?

Each time a picture of Atiku is flashed on my face, what comes to my mind is the rhetorical question about how he will fight the biggest monster in Nigeria polity.

Atiku has shown his business acumen over the years and had also revealed his political doggedness, including his unbending desire for the highest seat in the land.

Besides what Nigerians believe Atiku is capable of doing, there had been texts, mostly from his former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo that Atiku has a propensity for disloyalty and that the former Vice President is voraciously in love with money.

However, Atiku declared in the documents he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC that he made a little above N60 million in three years.

One may be tempted to ask if truly Atiku is a multi-billionaire, going by his annual earnings of a little above N20 million.

Of course, the former Vice President has many businesses locally and internationally, according to various reports, none of these has been established to have been acquired with the proceeds of corruption.

Atiku has never been convicted of any corrupt practices, even though he is alleged to be corrupt.

The United States Government has refused to grant Atiku visa, yet the government says it has no criminal charge against him. But the ultimate question remains; will Atiku fight corruption if elected as Nigerian president?

Atiku is a politician that is more liberal than Obasanjo and Buhari. OBJ and PMB are retired soldiers that would always treat corrupt politicians without a human face, Atiku will be mild if at all he will fight corruption as a Nigerian president.

Atiku has grown out of one of the most corrupt agencies in the country, the Nigeria customs. He is alleged to have built his business empire using the proceeds of corruption even before he ventured into politics.

He has made friends and allies, political associates, business partners beyond Nigeria who are ready to finance his presidential ambition. This is a strength that Atiku has, which of course is his weakness at the same time.

Many of these allies will have questions to answer if Atiku gets to power. And as it is happening now that some corrupt politicians have become sacred cows in the administration of Buhari, so will many of them be in Atiku’s administration.

So, fighting corruption in Nigeria will continue to be one-sided. The foes of any successive administration will continue to be the sacrificial lambs in the fight against corruption.

Except that Atiku, if he wins, deduces a better method to fight corruption, his administration may not even have the gut to query some members of the present administration.

The present crops of politicians in the All Progressives Congress had at one time or the other passed through Atiku’s tutelage.

They still respect him and judging by whom Atiku is, he may compromise some stands on the fight against corruption.
